Community Garden Council of Waterloo Region

The Community Garden Council envisions a strong, supportive infrastructure enabling residents to access land to plant and harvest their own food. The mission of the council is to promote and sustain community gardens throughout Waterloo Region.

The Waterloo Region Community Gardening Network is an umbrella organization. It started in 1997 with tthe help of Region of Waterloo Public Health, the Food Bank of Waterloo Region, the Working Centre, community members, and local gardeners. The Network is composed of garden facilitators, gardeners, and representatives from community agencies that promote food security.

The purpose of the Network is to promote and maintain community gardens in the Region. The Network's activities are focused on public education, building people's gardening skills, linking resources and people to community gardens, and information sharing among its members. Free gardening workshops are offered regularly to the membership, as part of a skills development process. The workshops are open to the public.

Community gardens offer many benefits to gardeners and the community. These include:

Fresh and affordable fruits, vegetables and herbs!
Community building! Community gardens strengthen the sense of community in a neighbourhood by providing a chance for people to meet and work together to develop an area that can be enjoyed by all. By connecting people, these gardens play an important role in building safer neighbourhoods.
Physical exercise and fresh air! Gardening is part of a healthy lifestyle.
Local food! Eating locally grown food requires the use of fewer fossil fuels than food that has been transported from distant places.
Stress relief!
Green space in urban settings!

This garden is located in a high density residential neighbourhood and serves many new Canadians. The garden grew to its present size in May, 1999, with support from the Food Bank of Waterloo Region, the City of Kitchener, and a partnership with the Chandler Mowat Community Centre. The City of Kitchener provided land in Chandler Park, the Home Depot donated a garden shed (2000), and Chandler Mowat Community Centre provides a free source of water.

Garden activities include: garden opening and blessing, activities for children, picnics and meetings with gardeners. Upcoming events include: canning workshops, children's programs, and a harvest celebration.

Doon Pioneer Park Community Garden offers 16 individual plots for organic food production.

The garden was designed in the form of a wagon wheel with a medicine (herb) wheel in the centre to pay tribute to the native and pioneer heritage of the area. Flower gardens and some raspberry canes surround the fenced-in individual plots. A reclaimed barn-board shed holds tools and resource material for gardeners. Plots are planted individually, but the flower gardens and pathways are cared for communally.

In the spring of 1996, a group of volunteers from the Forest Hill United church started a small potato patch on church property. They were responding to the social assistance cutbacks and the increasing demand on the Food Bank of Waterloo Region's services. In 2002 the Waterloo Region provided a grant to support the purchase of used lumber to create raised garden beds and defined pathways.

GROW Herbal Gardens is a non-profit project that provides mental health consumer survivors with a garden of therapy and enterprise, and with the training and skills necessary to maintain it. KW Urban Harvester (KWUH)

KW Urban Harvester’s initiative is to transform urban green spaces into anything sustainably edible. We seek to educate ourselves and others on how to grow food in urban settings, preserve the harvested vegetables and seeds, and the basics of how to make a potential profit out of urban farming.

We practice a sharing backyards/SPIN farming model which means that community members freely lend us their urban space to grow food in return for a small return of the harvest. We offer support to anybody in our area that is looking for land to grow on, even if they want land independently of KWUH. See here to find out who is lending or looking for land in the KW area.

Our practicing agriculture techniques are based on the principles of permaculture, biointensive agriculture, and forest gardening design.

Presently, we are working on a few different projects. First, we are developing a series of workshops we’d like to put on the coming months on various gardening techniques. On February 6th, 2010 from 12:00-2:00 at 55 Euclid Ave KWUH will be hosting a vermicomposting workshop. The cost for this workshop is only $10 and you go home with a vermicomposter!

This summer we will be holding a spot at the Kitchener Farmer’s market, either one or two Saturdays a month. In May we are hoping to sell seedlings and in the following months up until October we are hoping to have produce for sale.

We are also hoping to implement weekly guerrilla gardening festivities in varying spots around town. Ideas? If you have some – send them our way and let’s make it happen!

Likewise, we are also hoping to GPS all the edible fruit, nut, and berry trees and bushes in the area. We’d like to have a map of this on our website as a free resource for any foragers to use.

We would love to have you come and get involved - whether that’s just coming along for the gardening fun or planning an event or workshop. Whatever it is, we want it!

The Community Garden began in the Spring of 2000 as a means to help fulfill the mission goal of St. James Rosemount United Church - "to provide an active outreach to the community." Construction of the garden received financial and in-kind support from the business community, two levels of government, the gardeners, St. James Rosemount United Church and church members.

Out of the sixteen garden plots, one is gardened communally with the produce going to St. John's Soup Kitchen. The plots are flat and well drained with rich, loose soil. A barn-board garden shed is stocked with many tools and there are two water taps in the garden for easy hand watering.

The garden is pretty and tidy. The entrance to the garden is a rustic arbour. A shrub and perennial flower garden runs along the front. The wood chip pathways look great, and also retain moisture and keep the weeds down. Recently, a Peace Pole that displays the sign "May Peace Prevail On Earth" in Arabic, English, Hebrew, Seneca and Braille was installed. The Peace Labyrinth is open to the public 24 hours a day. A labyrinth is a 5,000 year old tool used for meditation, healing and spiritual growth. Everyone is welcome to walk the labyrinth in their personal to inner peace and enjoy the beauty of the garden.

Principles of organic gardening must be followed. Seminars and events are planned to expand gardening knowledge, share ideas, and foster friendship.

The Queen's Greens Community Garden

Started in 1998, this is a raised bed garden with a developing fruit plot and native flowers. It was built by neighbourhood residents with financial support from the City of Kitchener and corporate donations. The garden is located directly across the street from J.M. Schneider Haus which is a local tourist attraction. The innovative ideas, skills, and efforts of the gardeners at Queen's Greens have ensured that the Queen's Greens itself is an attraction.

Some highlights of the garden include natural landscaping using native plants, berry bushes, the artwork of Andy MacPherson on the water tank, a Bake Oven and a children's garden.

Rosemount Millennium Community Garden

This is a raised bed garden framed with wood. It has a herb garden and a sitting area, and watering is done by hand from rain barrels. The produce from one of the plots is donated to the House of Friendship and Anna Kaljas Homes. This garden has perennial flowerbeds, with some bushes dedicated as a memorial. There are usually lots of sunflowers.

Gardeners sign an agreement that outlines the rules of the garden at the beginning of each garden season. The gardens must be planted by the end of May using organic methods of soil enrichment and pest and weed control. Gardeners are expected to participate in group activities such as compost and wood chip deliveries. Meetings are held from time to time.

This picturesque garden was started in 1993 as a community building and crime prevention effort by the Safer Community Group in Victoria Hills. It was originally located on Mooregate Ave, but later moved to City park land on the south side of Victoria West off Westmount. Gardeners come from a wide range of cultural backgrounds to enjoy a common interest. The garden has lovely produce and is located near a lovely shade tree where gardeners rest.

A lovely organic garden with an old fashion water pump. The garden is nestled beside a grand shade tree an has both sun and shade. Gardeners can relax at the picnic table on the grass. This peaceful garden was started in May 1999 by local residents, St. John's Church and the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. The City of Waterloo helped to prepare the land.

These garden plots are new, tilled with fresh soil in the spring of 2008. Although CCCG is still in its birthing stage, native plants have been planted to keep it true to the area. Beaches allow residents, young and old, to sit and enjoy the progressof this garden. Planting with CCCG allowed many residents to come out mingle with each other and produce some wonderful fresh vegetables for those summer meals. Look for future information on canning, preserving etc...

This garden is situated on the grounds of the Ferguson Homestead in Cambridge, on a sunny hilltop plot. Having been used a few years in the past, this garden returned in 2006 as a partnership between Avenue Road Baptist Church and Fiddlesticks Neighbourhood Association. Open to anyone who wants to grow their own produce and flowers. A great place to meet your neighbours. Some of the garden is planted with vegetables to be donated to agencies that provide food security to residents of Cambridge.
