Waterloo Region - Who we are
Waterloo Region is one of the fastest growing and prosperous areas in Ontario. It is the fourth largest urban area in Ontario and the tenth largest in Canada with a population of 568,500. We expect to grow by over 200,000 people in the next 20 years, while maintaining the quality of life we are famous for.
The Region is home to the three cities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge and the four Townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich.
Our unique mix of urban and rural settings covers approximately 1,382 square kilometers. In 2015, Paramedic Services responded to approximately 39,020 calls.
SPRING 2017 Recruitment Process
We are looking to hire the best candidates we can find which demonstrate the skills of a paramedic and who match our Regional values. Below is a general guideline of the recruitment process that will be followed for Spring 2017. Communication with candidates throughout the recruitment process will be done electronically.

A job posting will be available November 7-18, 2016 on the Region of Waterloo website. In order to be considered, an online application must be submitted by the applicant outlining their knowledge, skills, abilities and qualifications in relation to the job posting.
Selected candidates will be invited to participate in the written exam on December 17, 2016. The written exam will consist of multiple choice questions based on all applicable Provincial legislation, BLS Patient Care Standards, Provincial Base Hospital Medical Directives and National Occupational Competencies, Regional philosophies and demographics. A non-negotiable exam time will be assigned to each candidate.
Please refer to the Required Documentation Timelines document to ensure you bring the proper documents to the written exam. If you do not bring the required documents, you will forfeit your application.
Candidates who are successful in the written exam will be invited to participate in the interview process. A non-negotiable date and time will be assigned to each candidate from January 16 to February 3, 2017.

Candidates are required to submit all documentation by February 17, 2017. Please find here a list of Required Documentation Timelines that must be completed and submitted.
NOTE: If you do not submit ALL required documentation by February 17, you will be removed from the selection process.
Candidates who are successful in the interview process will be invited to participate in the practical testing. A non-negotiable date and time will be assigned to each candidate from February 27 to March 3, 2017.
Candidates who are successful in the practical testing component will receive an invitation by email to participate in the physical testing component, which will be held by an external vendor. Physical testing will take place between March 14 and 24 in Waterloo. Specific details will be included in the email to successful candidates.
Candidates who are successful in the practical testing and who have passed the Region's Driver's Abstract process will be invited to participate in a driver education course and schedule a driver test. An in-class driver education course will be held on March 10, 2017; attendance is mandatory on that day in order to proceed in the process. Candidates will be provided an opportunity to sign up to an optional
practical driving session from March 13 - 20, 2017, as well as invited to select a non-negotiable date and time for the driver testing from March 13 - 31, 2017.
Reference checks will be conducted for all candidates who are eligible for the driver testing beginning the week of March 13, 2017. Candidates must provide three references of people who have directly supervised them, including:
- One clinical reference including a supervisor (if working as a paramedic) or a preceptor (if currently a student).
- Other supervisors who have directly supervised their work. Candidates are asked to include any references from direct supervisors in the human services, patient transfer, military reserve, lifeguard, etc. fields (if applicable).
- Character references will not be accepted.
Base Hospital Certification
Candidates who are successful in the drivers testing and who have passed reference checks will be invited to participate in base hospital certification the week of April 24, 2017.
Job offers will be made electronically the week of May 1-5, 2017.
All candidates who have accepted job offers will participate in a three-week orientation.
