Gardening

Gardening combines the three main types of physical activity: endurance, strength and flexibility.

Regular gardening chores, such as raking, tilling or weeding can be as intense as a workout at the gym.

A Texas research study found that gardeners reported higher life satisfaction, physical activity, energy levels and better general health.

According to the American Horticultural Therapy Association, gardening has many benefits, including:

  • Improved concentration and memory
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved feelings of calm and relaxation
  • Increased social interaction
  • Improved physical health
  • Improved motor skills and eye-hand coordination
