What Public Health Inspectors do

Public Health Inspectors with Region of Waterloo Public Health provide a wide variety of programs and services designed to protect the health of residents in the Region. This includes inspection of a number of public facilities (and businesses) where government regulations are enforced under the Health Protection and Promotion Act. These regulations relate to food safety, infection prevention and control, and recreational water safety.

Inspection and reporting process

Public Health Inspectors check a variety of establishments in Waterloo Region to ensure they are meeting minimum public health requirements.

During an inspection a Public Health Inspector observes the practices at the public facility (or business) to ensure the public's health is not being put at risk. An inspection report is then generated and discussed with the business owner or operator. The inspection report identifies infractions to the regulation or guidelines, if there are any, and provides a time period to correct it.

Afterwards, the results are available to the public on the Check it! We inspect it. website. If an inspector finds that a business' practices pose an immediate risk to the public, they will close the business.
