Ontario Laws
In Ontario, it is the law for anyone driving children in a vehicle to secure the child in a car or booster seat. This law applies to all drivers, including caregivers, babysitters, grandparents, carpoolers, etc. The driver is responsible for all children under the age of 16 in the vehicle.
The law requires that infants, toddlers, preschoolers and young school-aged children use the appropriate car seat or booster seat.
What The Law Requires
- Rear-facing car seats for children weighing less than 20 pounds (9kg)
- Forward-facing car seats for children weighing between 20 and 40 pounds (9-19 kg)
- Booster seats for children who are:
- between 40 and 80 pounds (18 to 36 kg) or
- under 4.9 feet (145 cm) or

Note: The law is the minimum safety standard. Check out each stage of car/booster seat to find out how your child is safest.
