Protective Equipment
Helmets For Wheeled Activities
Parents are required by law to ensure their children (under 16) are wearing a helmet when riding a bike.
The Brain Injury Association of Waterloo Wellington provides low income families with help to buy a bike helmet. For more information, please call The Brain Injury Association at 519-579-5300
How To Properly Wear A Bike Helmet
-
Forehead - the front of helmet should be the width of two fingers above the eyebrows.
-
Ears - the side straps should form a 'V' (like the two fingers victory salute or peace sign) you may see just below the ear lobes.
-
Chin - you should be able to fit just one finger under the chin strap. That way you know it is tight enough.

Helmets For Winter Sports
Hockey
Hockey helmets are the multiple-impact kind, designed to protect your head for many falls. They cover more of the back of the head. Hockey helmets are also good for ice skating and tobogganing.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Ski helmets are recommended. They are usually made as single-impact helmets. They cover the back of the head more than a bike helmet does. This is important because backwards falls are more common in snow sports than in cycling.
