Tobacco Free Sports & Recreation

"Play, live, be…tobacco free" promotes the adoption of tobacco-free sports and recreation activities such as games, tournaments or other events that take place in Waterloo Region.


What is Tobacco-Free Sports and Recreation?

When applied to sports organizations such as leagues, clubs, or associations, tobacco-free sports and recreation means that all players, spectators, coaches and volunteers refrain from smoking or using smokeless tobacco during league activities. Smokeless tobacco products include chew, plug, snuff or snus.


What are the Benefits?

The benefits of tobacco-free sports and recreation are:

  • Protecting children from the harm caused by second-hand smoke. There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke.
  • Giving athletes a chance to perform at their best.
  • Preventing youth from starting to smoke, chew or use other tobacco products by creating a tobacco-free culture that is shared by everyone.
  • Protecting the natural environment from pollution caused by cigarette butts.
  • Helping people quit or cut down on their smoking by creating a supportive environment.
