Physical Activity is a great way to promote student well-being. This web page provides ready to use tools and action plans using the Healthy Schools approach.

Before you start with your topic area, it is important to be familiar with the Healthy Schools Process.

Act, evaluate and celebrate

There are many opportunities to promote physical activity throughout a student's day:

  • Getting to and from school - Encourage students and families to use active and sustainable transportation such as walking, cycling, using another wheeled item or riding a school bus. Register for the STEP IN Weekly Walk and Roll Program or participate in Active and Safe Routes to School.
  • Before and after school (resources coming soon)
  • During recess and breaks - This is a good time to promote both structured and unstructured play. Train students to be Playground and Activity Leaders in Schools (PALS). This program encourages children to participate in playground activities at recess regardless of their gender, size or ability.
  • Through daily physical activity (DPA) and physical activity in the classroom - Enhance student wellbeing by spending at least 20 minutes each day being active in the classroom, outside of Physical Education time. The Ministry of Education has DPA resources for teachers and DPA kits are available to borrow from the Public Health Resource Centre (see curriculum supports below).
