60,000 Waterloo Region Residents Receive H1N1 Immunization

According to Dr. Liana Nolan, Medical Officer of Health for Waterloo Region, to date, 60,000 regional residents have been vaccinated for H1N1.

“We enjoy a great partnership with our local physicians and hospitals. Public Health has vaccinated approximately 10,000 people since our clinics began, and our physician and hospital partners have vaccinated approximately 50,000 more people. We wouldn’t have been able to immunize nearly the number of residents that we have without the ongoing help of our partners.”

Dr. Nolan noted that the supply of vaccine received continues to be balanced between Public Health clinics, hospitals, and physicians.

“Between the 16,500 doses received yesterday from the Ministry of Health, and the 13,000 doses we already have on hand, Public Health will offer community clinics for the balance of the week. High risk individuals will continue to be our priority, until we receive a directive from the Ministry of Health to expand the priority groups.”

Residents are encouraged to call their family physician or attend one of the H1N1 immunization clinics to receive their immunization. Health care workers are welcome to attend Public Health clinics if it is convenient for them to do so.

H1N1 immunization clinics for the week of November 10-13:
  • November 10 – Sir John A. MacDonald – 650 Laurelwood Drive, Waterloo – 2-8 p.m.
  • November 12 – Bluevale Collegiate Institute – 80 Bluevale Street North, Waterloo – 2-8 p.m.
  • November 13 – Huron Heights Secondary School – 1825 Strasburg Road, Kitchener – 2-8 p.m.

People will be required to verify that they and their family members are in a high priority group before receiving the vaccine. Priority groups include:
  • People under 65 years of age with chronic conditions (e.g. diabetes, cancer, heart conditions, etc.)
  • Children 6 months to under 5 years of age
  • Pregnant women
  • Children under 6 months of age or individuals with immune-suppression: household contacts and care providers of these persons only
  • Healthcare workers
The public are asked to call the health unit’s automated clinic phone line at 519-883-2324 for upcoming clinic dates and additions to the clinic schedule. Unadjuvanted vaccine, exclusively for pregnant women, is now available. Pregnant women are asked to call their physician or the health unit at 519-883-2272 to make an appointment to receive the vaccine.
