Third local death from H1N1 confirmed

Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Associate Medical Officer of Health for Waterloo Region, today confirmed there has been a third local death attributed to H1N1.

“The deceased, a male, was over the age of 50, with underlying medical conditions,” stated Dr.Wang. We have received laboratory confirmation that the patient had H1N1. The total number of H1N1-confirmed deaths in the Region is three.”

“The H1N1 virus is still circulating in our community, and I would encourage everyone to be immunized” says Dr. Wang. “One additional clinic has been added to our H1N1 schedule, and immunizations are also available from family physicians, and at some local urgent care clinics.”

    November 30th – Kitchener Memorial Auditorium – 400 East Avenue, Kitchener – 2-8 p.m.
    December 1st – Waterloo Oxford District Secondary School – 1206 Snyder’s Rd. W., Wilmot – 2-8 p.m.
    December 2nd – Huron Heights Secondary School – 1825 Strasburg Rd., Kitchener – 2-8 p.m.
    December 3rd – St. David’s Catholic Secondary School – 4 High Street, Waterloo – 2-8 p.m.
    December 7th – Resurrection Secondary School – 455 University Ave., W., Kitchener – 2-8 p.m.

The public are asked to call the health unit’s automated clinic phone line at 519-883-2324 for upcoming clinic dates. For general information about H1N1, the public can call 519-883-2289 or visit the Waterloo Region Pandemic website at www.waterlooregionpandemic.ca. Unadjuvanted vaccine for pregnant women is available. Pregnant women are asked to call their physician or the health unit at 519-883-2272 to make an appointment to receive the vaccine.
