Second Case of (Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus Detected in Waterloo Region
Region of Waterloo Public Health today announced that a second case of (Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus in Waterloo Region has been confirmed.
“Local cases were anticipated since the start of the outbreak, so confirmation of an additional local case does not come as a surprise” said Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Associate Medical Officer of Health for Waterloo Region. The second local case is an older adolescent whose illness was mild (did not require hospitalization), and has now recovered. There is no link between the two confirmed cases.
Workplaces and/or schools are not required to take any special action(s) at this time. The general public is reminded that they can lower their risk by practicing the usual, preventative practices against a range of illnesses:
- Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze by using a tissue, or cough into “the crook of your elbow” if you don’t have a tissue.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand rub/sanitizers are also effective.
- If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Additional information on the (Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus can be found on Public Health’s website at www.region.waterloo.on.ca/ph. The public can also call Region of Waterloo Public Health’s influenza hotline at 519-883-2289.
