(Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus Detected in Waterloo Region

Region of Waterloo Public Health today announced that the first case of (Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus in Waterloo Region has been confirmed.

“With cases confirmed across Ontario, we were expecting to see local cases as well,” said Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Associate Medical Officer of Health for Region of Waterloo. The case is a young adult, whose illness was mild, and has now recovered.

Workplaces and/or schools are not required to take any special action(s). Public Health recommends that you keep doing what you normally do, and that is:
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze by using a tissue or cough into “the crook of your elbow” if you don’t have a tissue.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand rub/sanitizers are also effective.
  • If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to avoid infecting them.
Additional information on the (Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus can be found on Public Health’s website at www.region.waterloo.on.ca/ph. The public can also call Region of Waterloo Public Health’s influenza hotline at 519-883-2289. The hotline’s hours will be extended to 7 p.m. tonight.
