Physical Activity

Health Canada reports that 63% of Canadians are not active enough to achieve the health benefits they need from physical activity. Your body is designed to move and it's surprising how little time it takes to stay healthy and reduce the risk of disease if you are physically active, regularly.

Active Living means finding opportunities for activity in all parts of life: at school, at work, at play, at home, and everywhere in between.

Region of Waterloo Public Health promotes Active Living by offering resources and promoting services, partnerships, and policies that encourage people in our community to include at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Active Living programs offered through Region of Waterloo Public Health and our partners include:

§WinterActive
§Commuter Challenge
§TV Turn Off
§Together 4 Health – Walkable Communities
§Women's Physical Activity

The health benefits of physical activity are clear. Being active can help to:

§Prevent diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, oseteoporosis, arthritis, and obesity that have all been linked to activity levels.
§Reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and improve well-being.
§Improve self-esteem.
§Maintain a healthy weight.
§Strengthen bones and muscles.
§Reduce the risk of developing joint pain.
§Prevent or control risky behaviours including tobacco, alcohol, and other substance use.
§Enjoy greater fitness.
