Third Case of (Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus Detected in Waterloo Region

Region of Waterloo Public Health announced today that a third case of (Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus has been confirmed in Waterloo Region. (Note: One of our previously confirmed cases was deemed not to be H1N1 after further testing, so Waterloo Region has a total of three cases to date.)

“Local cases were anticipated since the start of the outbreak, so confirmation of an additional local case does not come as a surprise” said Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, Associate Medical Officer of Health for Waterloo Region. The third local case is an older adolescent who has now recovered. There is no link between the three confirmed local cases.

Workplaces and/or schools are not required to take any special action(s) at this time. The general public is reminded that they can lower their risk of infection by practicing the usual, preventative measures against a range of illnesses:

Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze by using a tissue, or cough into “the crook of your elbow” if you don’t have a tissue.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand rub/sanitizers are also effective.
If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to avoid infecting them.

Additional information on the (Novel) H1N1 Flu Virus can be found on the Public Health website at www.region.waterloo.on.ca/ph
